The Problem
In most analytics dashboards, each chart is hard-coded to a single metric — revenue, say. That rigidity forces everyone downstream to depend on the dashboard owner whenever they want to look at something slightly different.
The result is a quiet tax on the whole org. Analysts end up creating and maintaining countless near-identical dashboards and charts just to satisfy different stakeholders asking variations of the same question. Duplicated work, slow decisions, and a backlog of one-off requests that never ends.
The Solution
The Dynamic Field Picker lets dashboard builders define configurable metric parameters — so end users can switch the metric on a chart themselves, directly in view mode, without touching the underlying dashboard.
The work was in making that power feel safe and obvious rather than overwhelming:
- A clear widget selection and configuration flow for builders, so defining what's swappable takes seconds.
- A lightweight in-chart control for end users to apply a dynamic field without leaving the dashboard.
- A separate, denser path for power users to upgrade existing charts with dynamic fields — progressive disclosure, so the simple case stays simple and the advanced case stays possible.
The Impact
The feature removed the bottleneck. Instead of filing a request and waiting on the dashboard owner, end users could answer their own follow-up questions in the moment — and analysts stopped maintaining the long tail of duplicate dashboards.
- 300+ dashboards activated the feature within two months of launch.
- 50%+ efficiency gain for analyst users, through ticket reduction and the removal of duplicated work.
